School Celebrates Chinese New Year!

We have been learning about China, because it is Chinese week in school. We are learning about China because in China they celebrate the New Year on Thursday the 3rd of February. I think that everyone enjoyed this week because it is fun to learn about a different country. The things we did in school were: An activity day, dressing up day, Chinese stir-fry, Chinese dinner and Swans class assembly.

To celebrate Chinese week we decided to dress up in either fancy dress or the colour of the flag because it represents Chinese New year. We all came in fancy dress we all came in different costumes and we focused on Chinese all week we also done Chinese writing on that day as well. We learnt how to write Chinese New year we all had ago at Writing it. It was non-stop fun all day!

On Monday the 31st of January all children at Newbold CE Primary School dressed up in Chinese costume.  Our teacher, Miss Chandler, had some pictures for us to colour in. We had a choice of a dragon picture and harder pictures. We had to choose four colours for our picture. When we finished our pictures we put them in a pile on Miss Chandler’s chair ready to be cut out to make a display. They looked very nice and festive. On Tuesday the 1st of February we had a Chinese activity day. We were put into three groups, dragons, tigers and rabbits. The first group went up to do Chinese dancing in the mobile. We did fan dancing with two beautiful, silk fans. We all enjoyed the dancing and did it very well. Later the other two groups did lion dancing and ribbon dancing. The second activity we made a good luck lantern. We used papier mache on a balloon and when it was dry we painted it red. We made charms to go through our balloons. We added tassel, baubles, beads and ribbon to our charms and put them through our balloons. Then we added glitter and gold paper to our balloons when they were dry. During the last activity we made origami. Origami is where you make paper characters like pandas, rabbits and other things. It was really hard to fold difficult ends and corners but we got the hang of it. At the end of the day parents came to see what we had been doing. We presented the dancing we did with the lady who taught us Chinese dancing. Later the Ashby times (a local newspaper) came to take photos of the dancing we had been doing. What a brilliant day we had.

Last Thursday (3rd February – Chinese New Year day) at twelve o’clock we went up to the mobile to have a delicious Chinese diner. We had a to choose from pork chow mein or quorn in black bean sauce, served with egg fried rice or stemmed aromatic rice. For pudding we could have fried banana and pineapple, or mandarin jelly. Everybody loved the food and said it was delicious!

At the end of every term we have a class assembly. This term we thought it would be a good idea to link it to the Chinese New Year. We made some masks, and learnt our lines. We really enjoyed performing the Chinese zodiac. The audience loved it to, and we where very proud of it.

We have made a film of our week, including a video of our class assembly.  It was the first time we used our digital camera to video with, so unfortunately we didn’t realise we had held the camera the wrong way round, until it was too late!  We hope it doesn’t hurt your necks too much!
